The island of Hawaii or the "Big Island" as it is referred to, is the largest of the Hawaiian islands. It is home to what is widely considered to be the tallest mountains in the world, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The island is the youngest of the Hawaiian islands and is still growing due to the current eruptions of Kilauea, the most active of Hawaii's volcanoes.

The island is entrenched with Hawaiian history as Kamehameha the Great ruled his kingdom from Hawaii in the later 1700`s.

The island is also home to several heiau`s (Hawaiian temples). These heiau`s include the Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, the Mookini Luakini Heiau and the Wahaula Heiau. The shores of Kealakekua Bay also contain Hawaiian history, as this was the place where Captain James Cook was killed in the late 1700`s.

Located on the west side of the island is the Kona coast.  Kailua-Kona was home to Kamehameha the great and his palace grounds are still located in this small town.  Kailua is now one of the major tourist areas on the Big Island and is home to many shops and restaurants. Traveling north from Kailua will bring you to the newest resort area of Waikoloa, which is home to several hotels and golf courses.

Hilo is located on the east side of the island and is the county seat of Hawaii.  This is where the university of Hilo is located along with many attractions, such as Coconut Island, Liliuokalani Gardens, Wailoa River State park and several museums and Historical landmarks.  Traveling south from Hilo will bring you to the Puna district. The Puna area is home to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Pele the "Fire Goddess" who controls the activity of Hawaii's volcanoes.  Continuing south will bring you to the southern most point in the United States, South Point.

The Kohala district is located on the north side of Hawaii and is home to the historic and scenic Waipi'o valley. The Kohala district is also a resort area with luxury hotels and golf courses gracing the coastline.  Traveling east along the coast will bring you to the lush and tropical Hamakua Coast. The Hamakua Coast is full of parks with Akaka Falls State Park and Kalopa State Recreation Area, to name a few.

When traveling to the Big Island of Hawaii you will be greeted with Hawaiian History, Tropical Valleys and some of Mother Natures most spectacular Volcanoes.
