Lanai,
which is also known as the "Pineapple island" is the 6th largest in the
Hawaiian chain. Lanai was formed by one volcano, Palawai and is primarily an agriculture
island. The Dole company owns the majority of the island where it raises pineapple and
employs the majority of Lanai's population. Lanai City is the main town of Lanai and houses the majority of the islands residents. The city is located at the base of the mountains and offers a majestic look with it's Norfolk and Cook pines. When travelling through Lanai City one gets the feeling of being isolated, as there is very little activity or traffic and the residents would have it no other way. Located just a few miles away from Lanai City is one of the island's spectacular bays, Hulopoe Bay. This area is also home to the Manele Bay hotel, which is one of Lanai's new resort areas. The secluded beach and crystal clear water make Hulopoe Bay a popular destination for day trips that originate from Maui and the Manele Bay hotel provides the perfect weekend retreat. The Lodge at Koele is also a new resort destination and is a popular destination for many celebrities. This upscale resort is located in the mountains of lanai and offers a tranquil setting and a new Greg Norman golf course. Located on the south side of the island you will find the Kaunolu Village. The village is now a national historical landmark and houses some of the best preserved Hawaiian ruins. These ruins include "heiau`s", which are Hawaiian temples, petroglyphs, ancient stonewalls and rock foundations where homes once stood. The village is also entrenched with Hawaiian history, as it was also a favorite fishing spot of Kamehameha the great. Lanai is usually not the choice of islands for an extensive trip but when traveling through Hawaii this gem is certainly worth a visit. click here to view Lanai towns map |
