Located on the north shore of Molokai is one of the
most historic and scenic spots in all of Hawaii. Kalaupapa was home to people afflicted
with Hansen`s disease during the late 1800`s and where Father Damien performed his
work. Kalaupapa offers tours through the town and the church where Father Damien
held mass.

The quaint town is full of Hawaii charm and the local gathering spot for residents to "talk story". Traveling east from Kaunakakai will take you along the coastline where ancient fishponds were built to stock fish for the Kings and Chiefs of Hawaii. You will also notice several churches along the way that were founded by Father Damien in the late 1800`s. As you begin to approach the east side of the island you will come across historical markers for several Heiau`s (Hawaiian Temples) and an ancient taro patch. As tempting as it might be to walk through these areas, please contact the land owners for permission. The towering cliffs of Molokai can only be seen by air or boat and are inaccessible by foot. The cliffs are some of the most dramatic scenery in all of Hawaii, with their waterfalls flowing to the ocean below. Tours of the Pali Cliffs are provided by several helicopter and air-tour companies making this a must do trip for the true nature enthusiast. click here to view Molokai attractions map |
