Located west of
Honolulu is the most well known attraction and sightseeing location, Pearl Harbor. The
navy base is home to the Arizona Memorial which receives thousands of visitors weekly from
all over the world. The memorial is open daily, with tours filling up quickly.
Honolulu is
full of attractions and has many ethnic, cultural and historic places. The Iolani
Palace, which was built by King Kalakaua in the late 1800`s and was the official residence
of Queen Liliuokalani until the monarchy ended in 1893. Waikiki is probably one of the most
photographed beaches in the world. With
it's beautiful
white sandy beaches and calm water conditions this beach is one of the most popular in
Hawaii. Waikiki also offers plenty of shopping, restaurants, attractions and parks.
Located
just outside of Honolulu is one of Hawaii's most famous landmarks, Diamond Head. The
crater is over 100,000 years old and the name "Diamond Head" was derived when
British sailors in the 19th century found calcite crystals on the slopes and mistook them
for diamonds. Inside the crater you will find the Hawaii National Guard Armory and
the F.A.A. Air Route Traffic Center. One of Hawaii`s most popular attractions and sightseeing spots is Hanauma Bay. The bay is a
state conservation district and receives thousands of people weekly. The bay is
accessed by a path which descends from the parking lot to the spectacular beach below.
Because of the amount of people that have entered the bay, it is now closed one day a week
for park maintenance.
Located in Makapuu is
one of the main attractions on Oahu, Sea Life Park. The park's main attractions are
the wide variety of marine life, which include dolphins, penguins, whales and sea lions.
The park also has a large "Hawaiian Reef" tank full of exotic marine
life.
Traveling up the windward coast will also bring you to a very popular attraction, The Polynesian Cultural
Center. The center recreates villages of Samoa, Tonga, Hawaii, Fiji, Tahiti and
Maori, with it's goal of preserving the culture of these native people. The center
is open daily (except Sunday) and offers tours and a Polynesian revue.
If you
have never seen the waves of Waimea, Sunset and Pipeline in the winter time, the North
Shore is a must on your vacation. As spectacular as these sights are, there are many
beautiful parks and attractions also located on the north shore.
Located on the north shore is one of
Oahu's most beautiful parks, Waimea Falls Park. The park
contains hiking trails, arboretums, botanical gardens and a 45 foot waterfall, which is
the park's namesake. There are events in the park, which include ancient sports,
traditional hulas and cliff diving. |
